Muri’s Record 800 – how long will it stand?

Sri Lanka’s talisman bowler, Muttiah Muralitharan, today ended his amazing test cricket career by taking his 800th wicket with his final delivery. He’s now retiring at the age of 38 after 18 years in the game’s top flight.

It’s an amazing record that beats Shane Warne in second place on the all time list by 92: he’s the only other bowler to exceed 700 wickets in a test career. In referring to Muarlitharan’s record, Warne is quoted on the BBC website saying “I don’t think anyone [else] will get there”.

We at Mature Marketing believe that someone will.

The fact is that the ageing society is predicated on better healthcare. This includes both preventative and healing services. It follows that you can almost guarantee someone will beat this record (and many others) simply by virtue of living longer and healthier. This will be as true for elongating the careers of sports people as it is for those of us in our 90’s now working at B&Q.

I doubt Muri will be working at B&Q to supplement his pension in later life, but I bet he’ll live to see the record he set today, broken.
