In an industry where the likes of Claudia Schiffer are considered over the hill, Spanish designer Juan Duyos took a gamble when he sent four women in their sixties down the catwalk.
The Giles Deacon presentation at London Fashion Week featured several older models
..But the glamorous grannies still managed to blow their younger competition out of the water at Madrid Fashion Week.
Duyos was unapologetic for using older ladies instead of teenage waifs.
‘I am fed up with seeing 20-year-old models advertise anti-wrinkle creams for women aged 60,’ he said. ‘Beauty does not end at 40 or 50.’
The designer described elderly women as being ‘just as beautiful as 20-year-olds’.
One of his models was renowned fashion collector Eloisa Bercero.
Following Monday’s show she said: ‘I am moved. They have made me feel very important.’
It could be part of a growing trend – at this year’s London Fashion Week, British fashion designer Giles Deacon used veteran model Veruschka.
The 71-year-old German was discovered at the age of 20 by the photographer Ugo Mulas and once worked with Salvador Dali.
